Renewal of the tram track with RCS
Angerkreuz Erfurt
“It looked like open-heart surgery,” – that’s probably how doctors would describe it. In the middle of the summer holidays, one of the most critical traffic junctions in the centre of Erfurt was brought to a standstill. The construction site stretched along the Anger to the Juri-Gagarin-Ring and in the other direction to Erfurt Mainstation.
The reconstruction work was required because of uneven subsoils which were causing the track to move and increasing the potential risk. The track had already collapsed once in 1956, so the threat of another collapse had to be eliminated immediately.
The challenge in this project
In order to avoid completely stopping the flow of traffic, the conversion was carried out in four phases at three construction sites. Erfurt residents only had to put up with five days of full closure. This mean that city life and ‘normal’ business could continue throughout the building works without significant disruption.
In addition, BUGA 2021 will require an up-to-date restoration of the rail network at the Anger 1 junction in order to provide a more frequent service to the city centre.
Solution and benefits
By starting the planning and tendering phase early with detailed delivery plans, it was possible to deliver the pre-assembled track components to the construction sites just-in-time. The modular construction, which is made possible by the Rail Comfort System, meant that track-laying work could be carried out within a very short time. The time-consuming assembly work required by conventional systems was carried out in advance at the factory using the RCS modular principle. All the specifications required by the customer in terms of stray current insulation and rail sinking could therefore be implemented without any problems.
The “Freiburg” fastening system, also supplied by SEALABLE, and the resulting construction method made it possible to concrete section by section without track displacement.
The city administration and public transport companies were not the only ones who were very satisfied with the smooth and efficient execution of the project. City residents also appreciated being able to quickly use their railway line again without complications. As a result, rail transport in Erfurt’s city centre was also optimally prepared for BUGA 2021.
- All-in-one solution by SEALABLE
- Time saving through prefabrication of the tie rod track
- Economical due to low maintenance requirements
- Highest level of insulation of all track components
- Advice and on-site service
It couldn’t have gone better! This was the praise today during the acceptance of the Bahnhofstraße - Juri-Gagarin-Ring construction site. And all were in agreement: the fact that this construction project was implemented in just six weeks as planned is thanks to the great cooperation of all those involved.
